Popular Ghanaian Afrobeats musician King Promise has come under fire on social media after a video surfaced in which he claimed that Lagos, Nigeria, is bigger than the entire country of Ghana.
In the viral video, King Promise was interacting with popular Nigerian TikTok streamer Peller in Accra. While discussing the population sizes of Ghana and Nigeria and their impact on streaming numbers, King Promise made a notable blunder.
“Nigeria is bigger than Ghana; come to think of it, the whole of Ghana is not bigger than Lagos. Lagos is bigger than the whole of Ghana. And it’s not even the capital of Nigeria. So if you are doing numbers-wise, it is not even fair; Ghana is 24 million people. Nigeria is about 300 million,” he said.
King Promise’s comments were met with widespread backlash from many Ghanaians on social media, who criticized him for being misinformed. Many suggested his remarks reflected ignorance and low self-esteem.
“Bro is still holding on to the social studies he was taught in 2013,” and “The ignorance on display is staggering,” were among the reactions on social media.

According to the Ghana Statistical Service, Ghana’s population was 30.83 million following the 2021 population census, with projections putting it at 33,742,380 by 2025.
Meanwhile, the official website for the Lagos State government states that the population of Lagos is just over 22 million, though exact figures are difficult to determine.
