Daddy Lumba’s family has scheduled a one-week observance in Accra on August 30, with final funeral rites to follow in Kumasi by Ashanti royal customs.

The family of Ghanaian music legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, known globally as Daddy Lumba, has officially announced that a one-week observance for the late icon will be held in Accra on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

However, final funeral rites will take place in Kumasi, in line with royal customs.

The decision was communicated by the family head (Abusuapanyin), Kofi Owusu, who led a delegation to the Manhyia Palace to inform the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of Lumba’s passing.

Speaking after the visit, Mr. Owusu revealed that the family deemed it culturally appropriate to first seek the counsel of the Asantehene before making any public announcements.

“We couldn’t proceed without formally informing Otumfuo. Lumba was not just an icon; he was a royal son of the Ashanti Kingdom,” Mr. Owusu emphasized. “Otumfuo welcomed us warmly and reminded us that his son must be returned home for a befitting farewell.”

He explained that while the one-week celebration would be held in Accra, the actual funeral rites, out of respect for tradition, would take place in Kumasi.

“We are still finalizing the venue for the one-week observance in Accra,” he added. “Considering the overwhelming turnout at the candlelight vigil, we need a much bigger space to accommodate mourners safely.”

Thousands gathered at Independence Square on Saturday, August 2, for a vigil in Lumba’s honour, with fans dressed in black and holding candles, chanting his songs and sharing emotional tributes.

A second vigil is scheduled to take place in Kumasi on August 9 at Heroes’ Park.

The family has assured the public that updates on the final funeral plans will be announced soon, and they are committed to giving Daddy Lumba a dignified and culturally rooted farewell.

“We call on Ghanaians to continue standing with us. Lumba gave his life to music and the people. We owe him this,” Mr. Owusu said.
